Tree Removal
Safe removal of hazardous, dead, or unwanted trees โ most stump grinding starts here.
Learn more โComplete stump removal 6 to 8 inches below grade so you can reclaim your yard, sod the area, or replant. Licensed, insured arborists across Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver, Tumalo, and La Pine โ single stumps or multi-stump cleanup jobs.
A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It's a tripping hazard, a mower obstacle, a target for carpenter ants and bark beetles, and โ for ponderosa or juniper stumps especially โ a slow-decaying piece of wood that can sit in your yard for a decade. Grinding it out takes an hour and gives you back the space.
The arborists in our network handle stump grinding across Central Oregon for everything from a single fruit tree stump to multi-acre cleanup projects after fire mitigation work. Every job is licensed, insured, and priced clearly up front. Most stumps are completed in a single visit, with clean wood chips left for mulch (or hauled away if you'd rather).
Two different approaches with very different costs and outcomes:
A high-powered grinder with a rotating cutter wheel chips the stump into mulch, working downward 6 to 8 inches (or deeper if requested). The hole is filled with the resulting chips. The root system remains in place but decays naturally over a few years. Faster, cleaner, less expensive.
Excavation of the stump and major roots โ typically with a mini-excavator. Disrupts surrounding soil and landscaping, costs 3โ5x more than grinding, and leaves a large hole that needs backfilling. Only worth doing when you need to install something requiring a clean root-free volume (deep foundation, pool, septic line).
For most homeowners, grinding is the right call. Even if you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, a deeper grind (12+ inches) is usually sufficient.
Most jobs are quick and low-disruption.
The crew confirms stump locations, identifies any underground utilities (we always recommend a free 811 locate), and stages equipment for clean access.
A self-propelled grinder works the stump and surface root flare into mulch, going 6โ8 inches below grade (deeper on request). Most stumps take 15โ45 minutes.
Chips are raked level and left for mulch, or hauled away on request. The site is left ready for sod, soil, or whatever comes next.
Pricing depends primarily on stump diameter, accessibility, species, and whether you want chips removed. Some arborists charge a flat per-stump rate; others price by inch of diameter (typically $4 to $8 per inch).
Under 12" diameter. Ornamentals, small fruit trees, smaller junipers. Often 15โ20 minutes of grinding.
12โ24" diameter. Most residential stumps fall here โ including mid-size ponderosa, juniper, and aspen.
Over 24" diameter. Mature ponderosa pine stumps and old-growth junipers can take an hour or more.
Grinding multiple stumps in a single visit reduces per-stump pricing significantly. Common after fire mitigation work.
The most common case. Most tree removals price stump grinding separately so homeowners can choose to grind immediately or wait. Bundling both at the same visit is usually the most economical approach.
When a tree comes down in a storm and gets cut up, the stump remains. Often paired with emergency tree service as a follow-up appointment.
Defensible space and fire mitigation projects often leave dozens of small juniper or pine stumps. We frequently come back after the mitigation work is complete to grind them all in one visit.
You bought the property and inherited a stump that's been sitting for years. These are easy to grind because partial decay has already started โ and they're usually in the $100โ$200 range.
Some Central Oregon HOAs (Tetherow, Awbrey Glen, Broken Top, NorthWest Crossing) require stump removal after a tree comes down. Check your HOA standards if you're unsure.
A grinder produces a lot of mulch. A medium ponderosa stump can yield several wheelbarrows of fresh chips. You have options:

Stump grinding in Central Oregon typically costs $80 to $400 per stump, with most residential stumps falling in the $150 to $250 range. Cost depends primarily on stump diameter, accessibility, and species. Multi-stump jobs often see per-stump pricing drop significantly. Some arborists also offer per-inch-of-diameter pricing, around $4 to $8 per inch.
Standard stump grinding goes 6 to 8 inches below grade โ deep enough to plant grass, install sod, or pour patio over the area. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, request a deeper grind (12 inches or more) and removal of as many lateral roots as possible.
Stump grinding uses a rotating blade to chip the stump into mulch below grade, leaving the root system in place. Full stump removal extracts the stump and major roots from the ground, which is more expensive, more disruptive, and rarely necessary. For most residential purposes, grinding is the right choice.
It depends on what you choose. Standard grinding leaves the chips on-site โ they make excellent mulch and can be raked into beds or composted. Full chip removal (haul-away) is available for an additional charge, typically $30 to $80 per stump depending on volume. Many homeowners use the chips and skip the haul-away.
A typical residential stump takes 15 to 45 minutes to grind. Larger ponderosa pine stumps or stumps with complex root flares may take longer. Most appointments fit multiple stumps into a single visit, which is also when per-stump pricing is most favorable.
Yes, but request a deeper grind (12+ inches) and ask the crew to remove as many lateral roots as possible. The remaining wood chips also tie up nitrogen as they decompose, so amend the soil with compost and a nitrogen-rich fertilizer when planting. For best results, wait 6 to 12 months between grinding and replanting in the same location.
